Glass Baby Bottles That Won't Break: Munchkin Bond Silicone Glass
With my first baby I always felt hesitant using plastic bottles, especially given they were being heated up over and over. But glass bottles felt risky also because it seemed so easy to knock one off the table or drop one in a moment of chaos.
Being unsure about plastic vs glass is one of the reasons I ended up not doing many bottles, but I knew I wanted to try to figure it out this time (baby #2) because I assumed I’d be extra touched out with TWO little kiddos and might not enjoy nursing as much. I also just find the bottle easier sometimes if we are rushing or if we are out of the house. Both my kids struggled to nurse well when under a nursing cover and I also like that with bottles you can see how much they’re drinking, so there’s not as much concern over whether they’re getting enough.
All that to say, I came across the new Munchkin Silicone Bonded glass bottles in my research for baby 2 and saw an ad where someone was dropping them from shoulder height and they did not break! I was intrigued, registered for them and then purchased more myself after testing them out. I love them!
They’re all glass except for the plastic ring around the top, the cover, and the silicone nipple, so no milk touches plastic at any point. But there is a layer of silicone bonded onto the outside, so it has a good grip, and it won’t break if you drop it. It’s similar to glass water bottles that have a silicone sleeve, only this one covers the entire bottle, and it’s not removable, so it doesn’t become another piece to wash.
They’re also really pretty, and the packaging was gorgeous when it arrived! I wish I took a picture — it was like opening a new iPhone.
I haven’t done a shatter test myself but I haven’t had any break so far (haven’t dropped any either though hah). They’re easy to throw in the dishwasher, especially if you purchase a dishwasher rack for bottle and pump parts. Munchkin makes this one, but we have the OXO one and we like it.
They travel well without leaking, I don’t feel hesitant to heat milk up in them since there is no warm plastic touching the milk, and and they’re compatible with Dr Brown’s nipples which have been working great for us. I did read a review that said the Munchkin nipples themselves didn’t work for their baby and I already had Dr Browns nipples so I just went with those right from the start. They look extremely similar though.
I like that they have the anti-gas tube thing (what’s that called?) but can also be used without it, and baby takes the bottle easily. One note I would add is if you’re reheating the bottle in hot water, the anti-gas tube causes the milk to come up through the lid when it hits the heat and I lost almost a whole bottle of milk this way one time! Lesson learned, don’t insert the anti-gas tube til the milk is already warm.
Hoping they come out with a white/clear anti-gas tube (instead of green) soon to make it even more aesthetic in my otherwise neutral cabinet of dishes!
