Franchise legendA player who's been a team's biggest star for so long, fans see them as part of the team's identity.
MVP"Most Valuable Player" — the award for the single best player in a season.
Free agentA player with no current team contract, free to sign with whoever offers the best deal.
Draft / draft pickOnce a year, teams take turns picking new players out of college. A "pick" is both the selection itself and a future turn to make one.
Trade deadlineA fixed date after which teams can't trade players until the next season.
Offer sheetA rare move where a rival team offers a contract straight to a player still tied to another team.
Contract extensionSigning a player (or coach) to a new, longer deal before their current one runs out.
RookieA player in their first year at that level.
True freshmanA first-year college athlete who's also a first-year student.
Front officeThe executives who make trades and sign players.
Regular seasonThe normal months of games that decide who makes the playoffs.
PlayoffsThe elimination rounds that decide the champion. Also "postseason."
Primetime gameA game scheduled in the evening as that night's featured broadcast.
Stoppage timeExtra minutes tacked onto a soccer half to make up for stops in play.
Positions, by sport
🏈 Quarterback throws/leads the offense · Wide receiver catches passes · Running back runs the ball · Pass rusher chases the quarterback.
⚾ Pitcher throws to the batter · Catcher crouches behind home plate · Shortstop/Infield plays the dirt · Outfield plays the grass.
🏀 Guard handles the ball · Forward/Center play closer to the basket, usually bigger.
🏒 Center/Wing attack · Defenseman protects the goal · Goalie guards the net. (Same words mean different jobs in basketball vs. hockey vs. soccer.)
⚽ Forward is the main attacker/scorer, same idea as "striker."
